A Sense of Place

I went to an exhibition at the Graves Art Gallery in Sheffield yesterday. Called A sense of place, the theme was 20th landscapes. A modest show, memorable images were Eric Ravilious’s seaside ravaged by WWII, barbed wire in the foreground. Stunning in its simplicity was a Roger Fry tree scene. A lovely hazy landscape with trees in a line by Pizarro, a Coldstream painting and an Auberbach that didn’t appeal to me at the time, (The view to Mornington Crescent) but keeps stuck in my mind for the energetic lines, despite the thick muddy colours.
